7 Steps to Being Disability Inclusive

The month of May is the “Better Hearing and Speech Month” with, 20 May 2022 also as the “Global Accessibility Awareness Day”. OneInTech Melbourne, the diversity and inclusion working group within ISACA Melbourne Chapter, invites you for their first official event: The 7 Steps to Being Disability Inclusive.

Disability inclusion represents the biggest opportunity in technology innovation. Over 1 Billion people are living with some type of disability (80% are hidden). Australia is ranked 26 of 29 OECD countries for disability employment.

We must fundamentally re-frame the way we think about disability in technology. We need leaders with disabilities to boldly lead the way. An Accenture study of 140 US companies participating in the Disability Equality Index found that the Top tier ranked firms achieved 2x the net income and 30% higher economic profit margins over four years than companies ranked lower on the index.

DEI, and particularly disability inclusion, must be integral to the tech sector moving forward. As individuals, we can all play our part by learning more about disability as an aspect of diversity and deepening our understanding of disability inclusion. Because without disability-inclusive policies, no tech firm will be able to attract and retain the talent it needs to thrive in the years to come.
